Take the Biofuel Pledge
"If the BioTruck team can make it all the way to Timbuktu on Biodiesel, I pledge that my next tank will be Biofuel."
See who else has taken it. |
The Biotruck is Recycled
Africans are adept at recycling. Items that we in the UK would throw away, have the prospect of a long and useful life ahead of them in Africa.
We'll be taking a variety of items which were destined for the scrap heap here, but will find a good home in Africa.
Fridges, old computers and used tyres, are just some of the items we have piled on to the BioTruck to take with us. In fact the BioTruck itself was saved from the scrap yard where its metals were about to be recycled with a carbon cost. At the end of the expedition the BioTruck will stay behind in Mali and be used to transport local produce and people along the main Mali highway and into neighbouring countries.
The 4x4's we are taking were also salvaged from the scrap-yard and will provide transportation to some of the more remote corners of the Timbuktu area. We chose the old Landcruisers because it's a model which is already very popular around Timbuktu and local mechanics have the expertise and spare parts to keep them running.
Re-using the vehicles instead of recycling them creates a smaller carbon footprint, and even though these are old vehicles which are more pollutant than modern 4x4s, they are still the vehicle of choice around Timbuktu because they are so reliable and rugged.
